The Birth of Venus by Botticelli depicts the goddess Venus arriving at the shore after her birth, when she had emerged from the sea fully-grown. Painted around 1480, the master painter wanted to represent the Neaoplatonic idea and meaning of divine love in the form of a nude Venus. However, Botticelli’s masterpiece, in my opinion, fails to also represent that divine love and beauty can be present in not only one type of Venus, but all goddesses and women of different skin colors, background and cultures. As such, my interpretation of the master work focuses on the providing detail to the three Venus’s emerging from the sea, distorting the other characters of the story, providing movement by the impressionist brushstroke technique and guiding the viewers eyes back to the three central figures by making us of the composition to redirect the eyes back towards the center. With that, I give you, Venus.
